The story of Sunshine follows the life of Jacob, a young, aspiring South Sudanese-Australian basketball player who is on the cusp of being picked up by US scouts for the US College league. Jacob's team is not up to his standard and so he angles to bring in a better coach. His choice is Eddie, a local guy in his 50's, who once played for a US college team, but has long since retired and operates a small sports store in Sunshine, a suburb in the west of Melbourne. Almost against his best instincts, he accepts an approach by Jacob to coach his under performing team, The Sunshine Kings. In the midst of aspiring to win at all costs, Jacob finds himself answering to Sunshine-raised lawyer Zara Skelton when he is caught up in a police investigation involving a teenage girl from one of Melbourne's affluent suburbs. Sunshine is the kind of TV that rarely comes along in Australia. It takes a very common goal among the South-Sudanese-Australian community in Melbourne in making it big in basketball and turns it into a very effective, engaging, and emotional story, one that includes and humanises just about everyone, whether black, white, immigrant, Australian-born, etc. It will have you feeling sorry for both criminals and racists, and I'm not saying that negatively. It embraces and showcases both the good and bad things about all of its characters, all of which are grounded heavily in reality. The absolute best performance you will ever see from Anthony LaPaglia and decent performances from the new South-Sudanese actors. The only glaring problem is that some of the auxiliary South- Sudanese characters are very clearly just random people from the community, and their acting shows it. That said, all of the acting is good enough that it doesn't take away from the overall strength of the production. The lead actor, Wally Elnour, is not the best of the three Sudanese leads (I'd say Deng was the best), but his work is adequate and I hope to see him develop more in the future. Highly recommend this series and I hope to see more like this from SBS in the future; every suburb has its own tale to tell. Additionally, I especially recommend this series to foreigners who would like a realistic depiction of what Australian urban life can be like. Order Tribute Gifts We respect the sensitivity and dignity that comes with ordering tribute gifts from the funeral home. It is for this reason that we have attempted to design our online Sympathy Store with the utmost respect to the family and the deceased. Funeral Etiquette FUNERAL ETIQUETTE Even though common sense and good discretion are always the best guides to proper funeral etiquette, a few principles still apply. It is a common gesture for close friends of the bereaving family to visit the family's home to offer sympathy and assistance - this is sometimes referred to as a condolence visit. With the bereaving family having to ensure that all the arrangements are looked after, a close friend(s) may become very helpful with food preparation and childcare. The visit can take place any time within the first few weeks of death, and may be followed with one or more additional visits, depending on the circumstances and your relationship with the family. In addition to expressing sympathy it is appropriate, if desired, to relate to family members your fond memories of the deceased. In some cases family members may simply want you to be a good listener to their expressions of grief or memories of the deceased. In most circumstances it is not appropriate to inquire as to the cause of death. If you attend a wake you should approach the family and express your sympathy. As with the condolence visit it is appropriate to relate your memories of the deceased. If you were only acquainted with the deceased (and not the family) you should introduce yourself. It is customary to show your respects by viewing the deceased if the body is present and the casket is open. You may wish to say a silent prayer for, or meditate about, the deceased at this time. In some cases the family may escort you to the casket. The length of your visit at the wake is a matter of discretion. After visiting with the family and viewing the deceased you can visit with others in attendance. Normally there is a register for visitors to sign. As with other aspects of modern day society funeral dress codes have relaxed somewhat. Black dress is no longer required. Instead subdued or darker hues should be selected, the more conservative the better. After the funeral the family often receives invited visitors to their home for pleasant conversation and refreshments. You can send flowers to the funeral home prior to the funeral, or to the family residence at any time. In some cases flowers may also be sent to Protestant churches. (Flowers generally are not sent to Jewish synagogues and Catholic churches.) Florists know what is appropriate to send in the funeral context. Gifts in memory of the deceased are often made, particularly when the family has requested gifts in lieu of flowers. Jul 18, 2017. According to the National Directory of Morticians Redbook, the number of funeral homes in the U.S. Is: 2017: 19,322; 2016: 19,352; 2015: 19,391; 2014: 19,486; 2013: 19,624; 2012: 19,680; 2011: 19,841; 2010: 19,902; 2009: 20,557; 2008: 20,915; 2007: 21,080; 2006: 21,088; 2005: 21,495; 2004: 21,528. The family is notified of the gifts by personal note from the donor or through the donee, if the donee is a charity or other organization. In the latter case the donor provides the family's name and address to the charity at the time the gift is made. Even if you don't make a gift, a note or card to the deceased's family expressing your thoughts of the deceased is a welcome gesture, especially if you weren't able to attend the funeral. FUNERAL ETIQUETTE The funeral is a ceremony of proven worth and value for those who mourn. It provides an opportunity for the survivors and others who share in the loss to express their love, respect, grief and appreciation for a life that has been lived. It permits facing openly and realistically the crisis the death presents. Through the funeral the bereaved take that first step toward emotional adjustment to their loss. This information has been prepared as a convenient reference for modern funeral practices and customs. THE FUNERAL SERVICE The family specifies the type of service conducted for the deceased. Funeral directors are trained to assist families in arranging whatever type of service they desire. The service held either at a place of worship or at the funeral home with the deceased present, varies in ritual according to denomination. The presence of friends at this time is an acknowledgment of friendship and support. It is helpful to friends and the community to have an obituary notice published announcing the death and type of service to be held. PRIVATE SERVICE This service is by invitation only and may be held at a place of worship, a funeral home or a family home. Usually, selected relatives and a few close friends attend the funeral service. Often public visitation is held, condolences are sent, and the body is viewed. MEMORIAL SERVICE A memorial service is a service without the body present and can vary in ceremony and procedures according to the community and religious affiliations. Some families prefer public visitations followed by a private or graveside service with a memorial service later at the church or funeral home. PALLBEARERS Friends, relatives, church members or business associates may be asked to serve as pallbearers. The funeral director will secure pallbearers if requested to do so by the family. HONORARY PALLBEARERS When the deceased has been active in political, business, church or civic circles, it may be appropriate for the family to request close associates of the deceased to serve as honorary pallbearers. They do not actively carry the casket. EULOGY A member of the family, clergy, a close personal friend or a business associate of the deceased, may give a eulogy. The eulogy is not to be lengthy, but should offer praise and commendation and reflect the life of the person who has died. DRESS Wearing colorful clothing is no longer inappropriate for relatives and friends. Persons attending a funeral should be dressed in good taste so as to show dignity and respect for the family and the occasion. FUNERAL PROCESSION / CORTEGE When the funeral ceremony and the burial are both held within the local area, friends and relatives might accompany the family to the cemetery. The procession is formed at the funeral home or place of worship. The funeral director can advise you of the traffic regulations and procedures to follow while driving in a funeral procession. CONDOLENCES The time of death is a very confusing time for family members. No matter what your means of expressing your sympathy, it is important to clearly identify yourself to the family. FLOWERS Sending a floral tribute is a very appropriate way of expressing sympathy to the family of the deceased. Flowers express a feeling of life and beauty and offer much comfort to the family. A floral tribute can either be sent to the funeral home or the residence. If sent to the residence, usually a planter or a small vase of flowers indicating a person's continued sympathy for the family is suggested. The florist places an identification card on the floral tribute. At the funeral home the cards are removed from the floral tributes and given to the family so they may acknowledge the tributes sent. MASS CARDS Mass cards can be sent either by Catholic or non-Catholic friends. The offering of prayers is a valued expression of sympathy to a Catholic family. A card indicating that a Mass for the deceased has been arranged may be obtained from any Catholic parish. In some areas it is possible to obtain Mass cards at the funeral home. The Mass offering card or envelope is given to the family as an indication of understanding, faith and compassion. Make sure that your name and address is legible and that you list your postal code. This will make it easier for the family to acknowledge your gift. MEMORIAL DONATIONS A memorial contribution, to a specific cause or charity, can be appreciated as flowers. A large number of memorial funds are available, however the family may have expressed a preference. Memorial donations provide financial support for various projects. If recognized as a charitable institution, some gifts may be deductible for tax purposes. Your funeral director is familiar with them and can explain each option, as well as furnish the donor with 'In Memoriam' cards, which are given to the family. SYMPATHY CARDS Sending a card of sympathy, even if you are only an acquaintance, is appropriate. It means so much to the family members to know they are in good thoughts. The card should be in good taste and in keeping with your relationship to the family of the deceased. PERSONAL NOTE A personal note of sympathy is very meaningful. Express yourself openly and sincerely. An expression such as 'I'm sorry to learn of your personal loss' is welcomed by the family and can be kept with other messages. TELEPHONE CALL Speaking to a family member gives you an opportunity to offer your services and make them feel you really care. If they wish to discuss their recent loss, don't hesitate to talk to the person about the deceased. Be a good listener. Sending a telegram expressing your sympathy is also appropriate. VISITATION Your presence at the visitation demonstrates that although someone has died, friends still remain. Your presence is an eloquent statement that you care. Visitation provides a time and place for friends to offer their expression of sorrow and sympathy, rather than awkwardly approaching the subject at the office, supermarket or social activities. The obituary/death notice will designate the hours of visitation when the family will be present and will also designate the times when special services such as lodge services or prayer services may be held. Persons may call at the funeral home at any time during suggested hours of the day or evening to pay respects, even though the family is not present. Friends and relatives are requested to sign the register book. A person's full name should be listed e.g. If the person is a business associate, it is proper to list their affiliation, as the family may not be familiar with their relationship to the deceased. Friends should use their own judgment on how long they should remain at the funeral home or place of visitation. If they feel their presence is needed, they should offer to stay. When the funeral service is over, the survivors often feel very alone in dealing with their feelings. It is important that they know you are still there. Keep in touch. SYMPATHY EXPRESSIONS When a person calls at the funeral home, clasping hands, an embrace, or a simple statement of condolence can express sympathy, such as: • 'I'm sorry.' • 'My sympathy to you.' • 'It was good to know John.' • 'John was a fine person and a friend of mine. He will be missed.' • 'My sympathy to your mother.' The family member in return may say: • 'Thanks for coming.' • 'John talked about you often.' • 'I didn't realize so many people cared.' • 'Come see me when you can.' Encourage the bereaved to express their feelings and thoughts, but don't overwhelm them. ACKNOWLEDGMENTSThe family should acknowledge the flowers and messages sent by relatives and friends. When food and personal services are donated, these thoughtful acts also should be acknowledged, as should the services of the pallbearers. The funeral director may have available printed acknowledgment cards that can be used by the family. When the sender is well known to the family, a short personal note should be written on the acknowledgment card expressing appreciation for a contribution or personal service received. The note can be short, such as: • 'Thank you for the beautiful roses. The arrangement was lovely. • 'The food you sent was so enjoyed by our family. Your kindness is deeply appreciated.' In some communities it is a practice to insert a public thank you in the newspaper. The funeral director can assist you with this. CHILDREN AT FUNERALSAt a very early age, children have an awareness of and a response to death. Children should be given the option to attend visitation and the funeral service. The funeral director can advise you on how to assist children at the time of a funeral and can provide you with additional information and literature. GRIEF RECOVERYIt is healthy to recognize death and discuss it realistically with friends and relatives. When a person dies, there is grief that needs to be shared. Expressions of sympathy and the offering of yourself to help others following the funeral are welcomed. It is important that we share our grief with one another. Your local funeral director can help family and friends locate available resources and grief recovery programs in your area. Himself Series Produced. Courting controversy everywhere he went – thanks to both his look and behaviour – he was the antichrist, the boogeyman, the reason you weren't allowed to listen to 'that devil music'. Of course, nowadays, music has evolved and The Double M's gothic persona no longer sends grandmas into fits of terror. But what do the youth of today make of the man who was the voice of the lost generation? The man who spoke to millions disillusioned teens across the world, uniting them through a communal hatred for the mainstream and abusive authority. A group of teenagers (aged 15 to 19) were played various Manson videos to gauge their reactions. The videos included some of Mazza's biggest hits, from The Beautiful People to This Is The New Shit. So far, so normal, you might think. But not everyone was impressed, and some really didn't like it. Then the awful realization began to spread, unevenly, through the huge crowd. It dawned on people when they heard screams, when they saw bloodied victims collapse around them, or when others stampeded for the exits, trampling some of the people in their way. Many of the terrified concertgoers followed their instincts and crouched or lay flat, not realizing that they remained exposed to a gunman. Others surged into surrounding streets and buildings, leaving behind debris lost in the panic — drink cups, shoes, and cellphones that kept ringing for hours, as relatives and friends tried to reach their loved ones and find out if they were safe. By sunrise on Monday, the staggering toll at an outdoor country music festival on a cool desert night was becoming clear: at least 59 people killed, the police said, and 527 injured, either by gunfire or in the flight to safety. A lone gunman perched on the 32nd floor of the Mandalay Bay Resort and Casino had smashed the windows of his suite with a hammer, taken aim at a crowd of 22,000 people, and committed one of the. Late on Monday, law enforcement officials said they still had no idea what the motive was. The police said they found 23 firearms in his suite. And when they searched the attacker’s house, they discovered an additional 19 firearms and, according to Sheriff Joseph Lombardo of the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department, “some explosives, and several thousand rounds of ammo.” He added that they also found ammonium nitrate, a fertilizer sometimes used in making bombs, in the gunman’s car. The sheriff said some rifles found in the hotel room may have been modified to make them fully automatic. Automatic rifles, which fire multiple rounds with a squeeze of a trigger, are highly regulated, and on videos posted online by witnesses, the rapid-fire sound indicated that at least one weapon was fully automatic. Down below at the Route 91 Harvest Festival, Melissa Ayala, 41, was drinking and laughing with four friends from California when they heard the gunfire, which at first they thought was fireworks. Then a man near her fell with a bullet wound to his neck. “There was blood pouring everywhere,” she said. And then: “It was just total chaos,” she said. “People falling down and laying everywhere. We were trying to take cover and we had no idea where to go.” Photo. A woman covered with blood at the festival. Credit David Becker/Getty Images The police identified the gunman as, 64, a retiree with no significant criminal history, who liked to gamble and seemed to live a quiet life with his girlfriend in Mesquite, Nev., about 80 miles northeast of Las Vegas. He shot himself to death before the police entered his room. The Islamic State claimed on Monday that the gunman was “a soldier of the Islamic State,” but provided no evidence. The group has generally been accurate in claiming only violence carried out by those directed by ISIS or inspired by their ideology online. However, in recent months, the group has become more sloppy and has made at least two false claims, including for an attack on a casino in Manila and a bomb plot at Charles de Gaulle airport in Paris. At 10:08, someone broadcast on a police radio channel, “we got shots fired — sounds like an automatic firearm,” and less than a minute later, “It’s coming from upstairs in the Mandalay Bay.” Video of the shooting captured nine seconds of continuous, rapid bursts of fire, followed by 37 seconds of silence from the weapon, as some in the crowd screamed in panic and others looked around in confusion. Aldean kept singing for a few seconds before realizing what was happening and taking cover. Harrowing video of mass shooting during set of Festival in. — Evan Schreiber (@SchreiberEvan) Gunfire then erupted again and again, in rapid-fire bursts. Jamey Eller, 66, said she and her friends hit the ground with the first fusillade, and then “the second round came and we started to belly-crawl.” As the shooting continued, they decided they had to get up and run. “We had no idea where we were going,” she said. “We just kept hearing shooting. It felt like they were following us.” Her sister, Cindy McAfee, 56, called her husband, Steve McAfee, who had stayed back in their hotel room — on the 32nd floor of the Mandalay Bay, where the gunman was. “He was looking down and seeing what was going on and said, ‘Just get out of there — he’s not in the venue, he’s here,’ ” Ms. “It was absolutely the most scared I’ve been in my entire life.” Photo. The Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department released this photo of Marilou Danley, the gunman’s “companion.” Credit Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department Almost nine minutes after the shooting began, an officer radioed, “We’re still taking gunfire, we’re pinned down.” Seconds later, an officer broadcast: “We need to snuff the shooter before there are more victims. Anybody have eyes on him?” Some survivors tried to climb the chain-link fence topped with barbed wire around the nearby McCarran International Airport, until firefighters ripped the fence up from the ground, allowing them to crawl under it. Krystal Legette, who was visiting from New York, was at the Sundance Helicopters office at the airport, waiting for a sightseeing flight around the city, when, she said, three women burst into the building, screaming, “They’re shooting, they’re shooting!” Then another woman came in, bleeding from a bullet wound in her right arm, and Ms. Legette, a nurse, and three others applied a tourniquet. More and more people ran into the office, until about 100 had taken shelter there, she said. A worker turned out the lights, locked the doors and told everyone to go inside closets and other areas away from the windows. Ambulances arrived at the festival grounds quickly, but were overwhelmed. Some victims were rushed to hospitals in cars and the backs of pickup trucks. Paramedics’ radio frequencies were so clogged that some used cellphones to call ahead to emergency rooms. “It was a wide range of injuries, from gunshots to shrapnel wounds, to trample injuries, to people trying to jump fences,” said Greg Cassell, chief of the Clark County Fire Department. As survivors poured into nearby streets and buildings, the police swarmed the Mandalay Bay, conducting a room-by-room search starting on the 29th floor, Sheriff Lombardo said. At one point, he said, Mr. Paddock fired at them through the door of his suite, wounding a hotel security guard. The officers backed off, he said, and then SWAT teams went in. The police also searched for Mr. Paddock’s girlfriend, Marilou Danley, thinking that she might have been with him, in part because he had been gambling using a Players Club Card, a kind of casino debit card, that was issued in her name. Later, it was determined that Ms. Danley was out of the country. The police searched the couple’s home in Mesquite and another house Mr. Paddock owned in northern Nevada. Hours after the shooting, as guests returned to the Mandalay Bay to retrieve luggage, those who had been at the concert were still in shock. Ayala and her friends from California described how they had run for several minutes, reaching the top of the MGM Grand parking lot, where they continued to see the chaos on the Strip below. They called their children, worried that it would be the last time they spoke. They flagged down a driver who agreed to take them to a friend’s timeshare, far off the Strip. “It wasn’t until we got there and locked the door behind us that we felt safe,” Ms. “That was the first time I really breathed.”. REUTERS/Jonathan Ernst WASHINGTON (AP) — President Donald Trump is outlining the financial health of the business assets he placed into a trust when he took office. The information comes in a new financial disclosure he voluntarily made Friday to the Office of Government Ethics. The documents cover January 2016 through this spring. The report shows Trump resigned from more than 500 positions, many of them a day before his inauguration as president. Trump listed at least $315 million in liabilities, about the same as in a report he filed last year. The documents have added importance because Trump isn't following the long tradition of presidential candidates and office-holding of making public his tax returns. Those returns provide more complete financial information than the personal financial disclosures, which only include broad ranges for income and debts. The producers are looking for an angle that will play on TV. When the contestants go into details about their lives, their stories are usually fairly compelling. Repeat champs open up the first basket to find a variety of festive surprises. A clever take on hardboiled eggs and a deckle of beef present the champs with a challenging task in the entrée round. Then, the judges taste creative holiday desserts that include honey and chocolate. Season 35, Episode 14. November 28, 2017. Hello fans of Chopped We've decided to take a well earned rest in 2017. Running Chopped for the past nine years has taken its toll on us and we need a break. That's not by accident. The process of getting on the show includes filling out an application and sending in some photos of yourself because the right look matters on a TV show. If you make it to the next round, you get a sit-down interview with the producers asking. Do you get nervous when someone you just met bombards you with personal questions? You have anxiety, and your angle is you're going on the show to overcome it. When they do find that good backstory, sometimes they play up part of it to tug on the sympathy heartstrings a bit more, even if it's not exactly the case. For example, on a Chopped Junior episode, producers played up divorced parents despite the fact that it happened when she was a toddler and she and her mother said it had no ill effects on her life. If the show was completely real as you see it, you'd have the reveal, the shocked look of chefs trying to figure out how sweetbreads and Kit Kats go with gnocchi and Mountain Dew, and then a whole lot of nothing. If you have 30 minutes to cook, and you're baking and boiling, you're going to stand around watching and waiting. To facilitate that, the ovens are set to 350 degrees and the before the baskets are even opened. And those reaction shots — the stunned looks on chefs' faces — are semi-staged. Yes, the looks are real, but they may do to get the right angle. Contestants might re-open the baskets a few times (with a cloth covering the ingredients) before getting to actually open the baskets and start. Part of the 'plays good on TV' aspect has led to some questions about whether people were kept more on personality rather than cooking skill. So is it a cooking competition or a semi-scripted show? There's no doubt that a gregarious personality helps, but is that enough to get a contestant through? Let's delve deeply into a specific example. On one side, we have John Sierp, a loud New Yorker with Food Network TV experience. On the other, Linda Laestadius, a. They competed in the appetizer round with chicken wings in the basket. Sierp had a bit of a disaster; his oil wasn't hot enough to deep fry the wings, so in a fit of panic he boiled the wings. Anyone for rubbery, airport bar chicken wings? Laestadius did have a tiny bit of pink in the middle of one wing — if the internal temperature hits 165 degrees, although she didn't measure, so we don't know for sure. More importantly, she used all the ingredients, while Sierp left one out. That's a to fans, but Sierp made it through; Laestadius got chopped. That raises eyebrows. How can a guy who left out a basket ingredient make it through? Sure, it happens occasionally, but not when the dish was rubbery chicken. Is it truculence over taste? Sierp thinks it's more creative editing. If you ever wondered how stuff can stay warm by the time it gets to the judges, wonder no more. Judges can get a sample early. It's only logical because if you're making something crispy or a sauce that can congeal and it sits around too long it won't be good eats. The contestants that nothing special needs to be done to assure the food makes it to the judges at the right temperature. And even though on Chopped seems like the culinary equivalent of Michael Corleone kissing you on New Year's Eve, it's not because it's all melty-melty by the time it reaches the judges. It's because the contestant made a bad ice cream. The key to a successful television show, regardless of reality or scripted version, is the element of surprise. There is for contestants who break nondisclosure agreements to wind up on the wrong side of a lawsuit. Survivor had an that raised the stakes for every show to tighten the reigns. The Chopped Junior is available online. Unless your hobby is reading over-broad legal writing, here's the quick version: blab and it's $750,000. And that's why finding results pre-airing of Chopped is as rare as ordering up dodo cacciatore at Pizza Hut. Let's paint the scene: there you are, TV lights beating down on your already sweaty forehead. A basket, three judges, and a plethora of crew staring at you. You fling open the basket and find the ingredients. You formulate your culinary dance, and then run over to the pantry and spend five minutes looking for the Hungarian paprika. Where is it?! Prior to each round, contestants have an opportunity to for a few minutes to familiarize themselves. And they do it prior to every round because, as you likely guessed, the pantry contents change depending on the basket ingredients and the round. That goes for the refrigerator as well. It's possible for a contestant to put two and two together to get an idea of what might be coming; you can only use apple pie spice in so many dishes, after all. The panicked rushing around is real. The having-no-idea-how-much-time-you-have-left isn't. That's just for the viewer to feel at home. Yes, it's a mad scramble to make your way around the television kitchen, but they don't want it to be down right silly. The chefs are given. For those untrusting souls, there is a clock available to glance at but really the fear of running out of time because you didn't know how much remained just does not happen. And yes, to your next question: the time limits are real. You get exactly 20 minutes for the first round and 30 each for the next two. Remember John Sierp? Of rubbery, boiled chicken fame? What appeared on TV sure made it seem like he slipped each judge a fiver and asked 'em to keep it clean. But what actually happens is great detail from each judge. The judging round takes. Each judge will go over every single morsel on the plate. And since they pre-judged specific items, they'll come back and address those for the camera. So what really happened when John Sierp served up a warm plate of disgusting? He says the judges. The others were not as good as his to the point where he wasn't even second to last, in his opinion. They just creatively edited the comments to look like he had to sweat it out. That's the power of television; 20 minutes of 'I love this' narrowed down to the solitary, 30-second negative comment to build up the tension. But hey, for a show with low production costs, it's easy to see why Food Network loves Chopped as much as you do. And these are the most fake things we could find about it, so if these don't bother you, keep watching, before time runs out on this great show. Just watching Chopped can be a bit exhausting, especially when you start sympathizing with the chefs on screen. But it's even more intense than you think, and according to former contestant Kathy Fang (via ), chefs are in for a non-stop, 14-hour day that starts when they get to the set at 5:45 am. They've already been up and at 'em for a while, too, as they have to be ready to go on camera — there are no stylists waiting for them. Of course, how long the day is depends on how far you make it. If you're chopped early, you're still there until the afternoon. Fang says those that make it to the final round are filming until around 8 or 9 p.m., and then, there are still those interview segments to film. That can take another hour to an hour and a half, meaning there's a good reason they might look exhausted. Some of the critiques can be so brutal you're cringing from the safety of your couch, but according to the judges themselves, it's not all hammer-of-judgement type stuff on set. 'I get totally edited,' Amanda Freitag told. 'I'm funny behind the scenes. I'm funny sometimes with the chefs. I think they capture those moments when I'm being stern.' She says it's hard to be intimidating and hard to keep a serious face on through the judging, and that side of her is only about 20 percent of her personality. She also says the judging isn't always about being, well, judgmental, and she has plenty of fond memories of the stories that moved everyone to tears, and the food that blew everyone away. The judges know how tough Chopped really is: Freitag has competed, and says it's harder than Iron Chef. Every television show has its growing pains, and unfortunately, there's no photographic or video evidence that proves just how bizarre the early ideas for Chopped were. According to Ted Allen (via ), the pilot episode — which was filmed and sent to Food Network — was set in a mansion instead of the now-familiar kitchen. The host was originally going to be the mansion's butler, and the strangest part was the fate of the failed dishes. They were going to be fed to the show's other star: A chihuahua. Allen says he can't remember the dog's name (but wishes he could), and also says Food Network thought the show was too weird for them. But the network's executive producer cut all the bizarre cheese and turned the show into the Chopped we all know and love. There are two different ways contestants can play Chopped: They can concentrate strictly on their own dish, or they can also sabotage their competitors. According to contestant — and winner — Kathy Fang (via ), contestants have equal access to the pantry. There are tons of other ingredients, of course, but there's only a single jar of each seasoning. That means not only are contestants under the gun to get in and get what they need before someone else grabs it, but they don't want to ask for help in finding ingredients, either. It would be completely legitimate for someone to hide a spice after you've asked for it, and whether that's playing dirty or playing smart, well, that's all up for interpretation. There would be no Chopped without the mystery baskets, and if you've wondered just how those ingredients come together, you're not alone — the contestants are wondering that, too! The genius behind those baskets is Sara Nahas-Hormi, and her official title is culinary producer. Ingredients aren't random, and there are a few loose guidelines she works with. According to her interview with, baskets are designed to include ingredients whose flavor profiles work together, even if they seem completely unrelated. There's also a 5-page document created for each basket, detailing things like the basket's theme, backgrounds the foods, and how they're usually used. She's not working entirely alone, and gets to weigh in on some of the baskets, too. They plan weeks in advance, and they play the game! Bleifer says part of their criteria for picking boxes is if they can't come up with an idea for a dish within 15 seconds, that particular combination isn't used. They try not to repeat ingredients, and they won't use ingredients that aren't humanely raised, on any watch lists, or any that can't be prepared in the allotted time. There's no way to watch Chopped without putting yourself in the contestants' shoes, and that's especially true for the moment when they open their box. Will it be something you have in your kitchen or eyeballs? That's the stuff you cringe at, and you're not alone. According to Ted Allen, he cringes, too. 'Yea, there have been ingredients that freaked me out,' he admitted on the, after listing all the different types of tongue they've had so it's safe to assume tongue is one of his cringe-worthy ingredients. Says, too, the judges '[.] have all sorts of comments about the ingredients.' But he also notes they don't have any say in what's in the boxes, and they're all professionals who judge based on the dishes' merits (or demerits), not on their own personal tastes. And if you've ever wondered if there's anything the chefs have refused to eat (aside from improperly handled or cooked food), there is. It happened once, and while Bleifer doesn't say what the ingredient was, he does say that it was due to an allergy.
